"A Prayer for Renee Good" and "ICE Out Sestina"

A Prayer for Renee Good

Oh, Universal Body
Thank you for the evolution of tears
to signal to our Mothers when
we are in pain, in need of Milk.
Thank you for the drum, the drum
the rhythm in our bones,       to silence
                                                         the gun.
Grant us protection, help us break the crust of hurt
           On our smelly socks,
                                  And our dirty shirts,
with a poem, a poem, Renee Good, a poem.

now that we’ve said a prayer, it’s time to cast a SPELL

Why you gotta be like that, ICE??? You had a SIMPLE job
to protect the habitat of Polar Bears and provide space for my
Canadian father to play hockey, to make a margarita or two…
ICE cracks, ICE melts, ICE turns to rivers
It has begun
Spring has sprung
You are gone
Here comes the SUN.

Ice Out Sestina

My father sprays our yard with water, making ice
his favorite pastime in winter, Minnesota.
He whistles, the call of a Loon
to play hockey, he serves coffee
I swoop in, a pterodactyl
a child, crying for milk

            In the morning we milk
            The cows, we made ice
            cream, the labor soon redacted
life on the farm in Minnesota
Not a breath, but a Cough, easing
            like a deflating balloon

looking alone at the moon
you could see the Milky
Way galaxy, hotter than coffee
Skating together on the ice
rink, together, celebrating Minnesota
Nice, together, in the face of perfect terror
                      Looking at the files redacted
                      At the P O T U S, who acts like a loony
                      attacks the people in Minnesota
he can come in and milk
                      us with agents of ICE
                      raise the price of Coffee
the price of Cough
Syrup, medicine for erectile
           disfunction , shampoo for lice
Kids birthday parties and mylar balloons
Attacking farmers, trying to make milk
to protect the people of Minnesota

                     Here in Minnesota
                     We’re never alone
                     We’re still paying co-fees
                     They try to milk
                     money for our prescriptions
                     We’re done playing nice

Ice out of Minnesota, a pterodactyl,
A loon, MLK, Harvey Milk, wake up and smell the coffee
