Unlikely Saints: Punk 'n' Poetry, November 2023
On November 21, 2023, the Unlikely Saints gathered at Bar Redux in New Orleans for a special show of punk 'n' poetry! Chuck Perkins and Russ Mercado read their poems, Solo X performed an integrated show of poetry and music, and Jennifer Blowdryer recited work with Dick Deluxe on guitar. This video includes the full footage of all performances.
Jennifer Blowdryer fronted San Francisco Punk Band, The Blowdriers, in 1977 - 1979, as a teen. Wrote a column for Maximum R'n'Roll, later for New York Press. First book was with underground comics publisher Last Gasp, most recent was last year with Apathy Press: Book is True Blue: Essays on NYC.
Founded White Trash Debutantes in San Francisco, '84, moved to NYC on Writing Fellowship for Columbia, '85. Founded Smut Fests, strippers and doms performing their own work in a Lap Dancing Parlour in NYC, 88. Has songs on SoundCloud, and cd/albums Pinot Grigio and She's Got the Weirdness.
Solo X is an avant-gadre industrial/electronic force that blurs the line between Art, Poetry, Music, Destruction & Transformation.
Chuck Perkins is an American spoken word poet, orator, narrator, and activist who infuses the rhythms and vernacular from the Crescent City into his musical spoken word pieces. The New Orleans Times-Picayune says that he "recites poetry like a prize fighter...always going for a knock out." He has performed internationally at London's prestigious South Bank Centre with Amiri Baraka, as well as in Paris, Toulouse, Manchester, Liverpool, Cambridge, and Amsterdam.
