Jeremy repeatedly bugged Nick to drive down.

At first Nick baulked. Work, his life, Rachel, and all that.

And then, just when Jeremy thought he’d have to face the weekend alone, a message arrived. ‘Gotta a couple of things to finish at work, then I’ll hit the highway,’ Nick wrote.

Jeremy calculated the travel time via Google Maps. With Friday and after work traffic, it would be just over three hours to Ulladulla.

A few hours later, Nick messaged again. ‘Sorry dude, got sidetracked in Nowra. You know that fish and chip shop I found a few years back, I’m here again!!! Every time I take a trip down the coast, I have to stop! The calamari’s to freaking die for!!!’

Nick didn’t stop the last time he drove down, but okay.

If Nick had arrived in Nowra that meant he was half an hour away. How long would it take him to order, and eat? Would he consume his food while driving, or would he find somewhere to stop?

Then, another message arrived with more exclamation points and an image. ‘It’s fantastic here! The scenery is so breath taking, so amazing!’

That pic, Jeremy thought. If you’ve seen one estuary at sunset, you’ve seen them all.

The message behind all that couldn’t have been any clearer, and as Jeremy watched his phone, Nick texted again, spelling it out. ‘You wanna come and have fish and chips with me? It’s only half an hour away!’

That last exclamation point. Fuck sake.

Jeremy chucked his phone down. He looked around. If he could make the house spotless, maybe that would help.
