Hungarian (And Local!) Poetry in New Orleans

 

 

Xander Bilyk

Xander Bilyk (he/she/they/whatever/whatchamacallit(candy bar)) used to reside in New Orleans until he got squished by a car crossing Claiborne, and became a grad student. She is pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at Hamline University in St. Paul. They write poetry and fiction, is a singer/songwriter/pianist, performs stand up comedy, and theater. Whatever currently lives in St. Paul with whatchamacallit's partner Jeremy, their cats Fern and Mistakenly, their axolotls Thackery and Salem, and a three legged one eyed chihuahua named Maxx. Dylan Krieger

Dylan Krieger is writing the apocalypse in real time in south Louisiana. She earned her BA in English and philosophy from the University of Notre Dame and her MFA in creative writing from LSU. She is the author of Giving Godhead (Delete, 2017), Dreamland Trash (Saint Julian, 2018), No Ledge Left to Love (Ping Pong, 2018), The Mother Wart (Vegetarian Alcoholic, 2019), Metamortuary (Nine Mile, 2020), Soft-Focus Slaughterhouse (11:11, 2021), and Hideous Compass (Underground Books, 2022). Marian D. Moore converted a childhood love of science into a career in computing programming.  Her love of literature led to her writing both poetry and fiction. In 1998, she became a member of the NOMMO Literary Society, a writing workshop led by New Orleans writer and activist Kalamu ya Salaam. Her poetry has been published in the journals Drumvoices, The Louisiana Review and Bridges, the anthologies Mending for Memory: Sewing in Louisiana Essays, Stories, and Poems, Dominion: An Anthology of Speculative Fiction from Africa and the African Diaspora, and I Am New Orleans. Her book of poetry, Louisiana Midrash, was published by UNO Press/Runagate in January 2019.

Dennis Formento

Dennis Formento lives in Slidell, LA, USA, near his native New Orleans. His books of poetry include Spirit Vessels (FootHills Publishing, 2018), Cineplex (Paper Press, 2014,) Looking for An Out Place (FootHills Publishing, 2010.) Dennis edited Mesechabe: The Journal of Surregionalism 1990-2001. He is the St. Tammany Parish organizer of poetry events for 100,000 Poets for Change, a network of poets for peace, sustainability and justice world-wide. His recent publications include translations out of Italian of poems by Florentine poet Cristina Campo (1923-1977), soon out from BlazeVOX, and a few of his own poems translated into Italian in the bioregional publication, Lato Selvatico.  

Gabor G Gyukics

Gabor G Gyukics (b. 1958) is a Hungarian-American poet, jazz poet, literary translator born in Budapest. He is the author of 11 books of original poetry, 6 in Hungarian, 2 in English, 1 in Arabic, 1 in Bulgarian, 1 in Czech and 16 books of translations including A Transparent Lion, selected poetry of Attila József and Swimming in the Ground: Contemporary Hungarian Poetry (in English, both with co-translator Michael Castro) and an anthology of North American Indigenous poets in Hungarian titled Medvefelhő a város felett. He writes his poems in English (which is his second language) and Hungarian. His latest book in English is a hermit has no plural (Singing Bone Press, 2015). Sean F. Munro

Sean F. Munro is an Associate Professor of English at Delgado Community College. He has poems in Indiana Review, Split Lip Magazine, and Under a Warm Green Linden. He hosts a weekly poetry radio show, Lunch Poems, on Wednesdays at 12:30pm on 99.1 FM, helps organize the New Orleans Poetry Festival, co-curates The Splice Poetry Series, and manages LitWire, the literary event calendar for New Orleans.
